Spindles... Lots of Spindles

Spindle spinning can be a lot of fun and is a good entree into the world of spinning. It is nothing like spinning on a wheel, so don't draw any conclusions. Spinning with a spindle can actually be a bit more challenging than a wheel. But hey, people have been using spindles for 1000s of years, so you can surely do it.

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED WITH A SPINDLE:

  • carded fiber (or raw fleece and handcards) • a niddy noddy or skeinwinder
  • book ("Spindle Spinning from Novice to Expert") and/or Video (“Drop Spindle Spinning”)
    (Nice to have, in ranked order: 1. swift and either ballwinder or nostepinne; more fiber 2. spinning gauge)








CASCADE SPINDLES:

These rim-weighted handcrafted spindles represent a peak within the Cascade Mountain Range. Each features a notch, a heavy gauge stainless steel hook and a hand-turned shaft and comes with a card describing the peak it represents.

The Baker features the laminated beauty of yellowheart and walnut woods plus a 9" shaft with decorative carvings. Weight ranges from 1 oz. to 1 3/8 oz.

The Cougar is a petite, lightweight spindle for fine fiber spinning. Made of pomelle bubinga with an 8.5" tapered shaft. Weight is 1/2 oz or less.

GREENSLEEVES SPINDLES

Beautifully handcrafted, these spindles are also well balanced and a joy to spin on.

The Vixen is a very small high whorl spindle made of dense exotic woods. It is ideal for spinning silk, cotton and any fine fiber. Whorl diameter is 1.5"-2" and shaft is 8". Weights are 0.3-0.6 ounces.

Named after Tom Fool, the jester, the Tom Foolery spindle is available as a high whorl or bottom whorl; it is made in burls with beautiful exotic laminated woods such as kingwood and paduk or bubinga and rosewood.
Whorl diameter is 2.5" and shaft is 9-10". Weights vary between 1.3 and 1.8 oz.

The Apprentice is a simple, durable high whorl spindle with a very easy spin. Made of cherry it has a 2.5" whorl, 10" shaft and weighs 1.3 to 1.7 ozs.

The Lionheart (named for King Richard) is a refined version of the Apprentice. It has a long spin and is made of various exotic woods. Whorl diameter is 2.5", shaft is 10" long and weights vary between 1.3 and 1.7 ounces.

The Mjolinor was inspired by an old Nordic spindle design. It is a high whorl spindle made from beautiful exotic woods with either a white birch or mahogany shaft. Whorl diameter is 4", shaft is 12" long and weights vary between 1.5 and 1.9 ounces.

The Hound is simple in line but striking in the choice of wood. It is an elegant high whorl spindle with a shaft that is turned at the bottom and it comes in a variety of exotic woods. Whorl diameter is 3", shaft is 10-11" long and weights vary between 1.5 and 2 ounces.

The Fox is a lighter, streamlined version of the above. It is swift of spin, with a 2.5" whorl, 9-10" long shaft and a weight of 1 to 1.4 ozs.

The Loki: like its namesake in Norse mythology, Loki the trickster, this high whorl spindle can be deceiving in looks. Based on a historical design, it features a beautiful domed shape that keeps the beauty of the exotic wood in the forefront. It spins fast and long and is perfect for spinning fine fibers such as fine wools, cashmere, silk and cotton. Whorl diameter is 1.5-2.25", shaft is 8"-9" long and weights vary from .8 to 1.5 ounces.

The Lady Barbara is small, lightweight and fast with a very long spin. This high whorl spindle is ideal for spinning fine wools, cotton, cashmere, silk and other fine fibers. The 2" whorl is made of rosewood and sapele; shaft is 8"-9" long and weights vary from .4 to .9 oz.

The Queen Sceptres: all these high whorl spindles have a similar design, that of a sceptre, but the exotic woods vary with each style. Whorl diameter is 2.5", shaft is 9" and weights vary between 1 and 1.9 ounces.
The Catherine of Aragon is made of pomelle bubinga and purpleheart.
The Anne Boleyn is made of redwood burl and bloodwood.

Made of exotic woods, the McKenna is very similar to the Queen Sceptres (above) but with the Queens' turnings on both the top and bottom of the whorl. This makes for a great drift and a long sustained spin on a very petite spindle. With a 1.5" whorl, a 7"-8" shaft and a weight of 0.4-0.7 oz, this high whorl spindle is recommended for very fine spinning.

The Bare Bones: if you are a beginner, a spinning teacher, or if you are simply dying to have a Greensleeves spindle but can't afford one of the more expensive ones, the Bare Bones is for you. This high whorl spindle features a plain shaft but also a beautiful whorl made of premium maple. It spins long and leisurely and can take rough-and-tumble beginners (although you should, as with any spindle, be careful not to drop directly on the hook) or go on long outdoor trips. Whorl diameter is 2.5", shaft is 10" long and weights vary between 1.4 and 1.8 ounces.

BUTCHER'S CROWN: this neat little gadget is designed to protect the hook on your spindle. It fits snugly and firmly on the upper shaft and hook, protecting the hook, plus it also doubles as a wrist distaff - just take if off your spindle, slip it over your wrist and voilà, an instant distaff. It is beautifully turned and made in a wonderful variety of exotic woods. In addition to Greensleeves spindles, Butcher's crowns will also fit Journey and Vermont spindles.

LIZZY KATE: finally a lazy kate for spindles! The three 3/8" holes at the base of this Kate include sealed ball bearings and will hold most spindles upright and firmly for smooth and effortless plying. Made of walnut, the Kate comes with a plying guide that helps keep the strands tensioned and untangled. It features brass fittings, a 6" diameter base and an extra hole to insert an orifice hook ( hook not included). Comes with instructions.

Kundert Spindles

these beautifully handcrafted top-whorl spindles made by Steve Kundert are 10.5" long with a stainless steel hook and notch on the whorl. Weights vary between 1.4 and 1.9 ounces. They come in a variety of woods (mostly a combination of ash, cedar, walnut and cherry) so the exact look of the spindle you purchase may not match pictures. Additionally, the multi-colored spindles can vary in the placement of the various pieces of wood on the whorl. You might think of each as a "one of a kind."

Medieval Pewter Whorls and Spindles

these pewter whorls are based on 13th to 15th century lead spindle whorls found in English museums and private collections. They weigh approximately 24 grams (less than 1 oz.). and diameter is1 1/4". They are cast just like they used to be but made of safe (no lead) pewter. The whorls come with a descriptive card and are available with a 10" hand-finished (stained, oiled and waxed) hardwood shaft with a carved notch on top, similar to what would have been used in the Middle Ages. We have not shown the total length of the shaft so we could highlight the whorl.

Sculpted Spindles

beautifully hand-sculpted by Helen "Halla" Fleischer, each one of these spindles is unique. The whorls are polymer clay and the shafts are birch;they are stained and sealed with polymer-safe acrylic. (If needed, they can be cleaned with a damp cloth or polished with Future Acrylic Floor Polish.) Mother Marion's Kick Spindle

also called Mother Marion's Magnificent Spinning Machine, this handy spindle works much like a drop spindle but allows you to sit down while spinning. Just turn the large whorl with your foot and spin off the tip of the spindle or place it on a table and use your hand to spin the spindle. Beautifully crafted of cherry or walnut and hand-finished with several coats of Danish oil and a final coat of Crystalwax finishing wax for a nice sheen. Each spindle has been spun-tested by the manufacturer and comes with instructions and a starter spun yarn. Base is 5" x 12", height from base to top of spindle is 15" and diameter of kick wheel is 5 3/4". A wonderful portable tool and a sure conversation piece!

Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles

Two of these are good beginner spindles for spinning wool; they are 12" long. Choose the 3" diameter whorl (far left; weight is 2.2 ozs.) or the 4" diameter (approximately 3 ozs.). Also available for fine spinning is a new 2 5/8" diameter 11" spindle that weighs about 1 ounce. All three "hi-lo" spindles feature a brass hook at the whorl end for high whorl spinning and a notch at the top of the shaft for bottom whorl spinning, .

these high whorl spindles feature a maple shaft and walnut whorl with a notch. The Jenny is 7" long and weighs approximately 1/2 oz. and the Molly is 10" long and weighs approximately 3/4 ozs.

The Double Whorl high whorl (above right): this 12.5" spindle with a brass hook is quite versatile: use it with 2 whorls or, for a lighter spindle, just slide one of the 2.75" whorls off. Each whorl weighs a little less than one ounce and the shaft weighs less than 1/2 ounce. Wind the yarn on the shaft; when you are finished spinning, remove both whorls and use the shaft as a handy shuttle!
